Claude Dorsey March 03, 2010
Service Information Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM on Monday, March 8, at Lake Park Lutheran Church, 2647 N. Stowell Ave., Milwaukee, WI 53211 (at the corner of Park Place). Services at the church will follow at 7:00 PM. Interment at Graceland Cemetery will be private.
Memorials Memorials in Claude’s name may be made to Lake Park Lutheran Church.

Claude was born in Gainesville, GA on January 10, 1914 to William and Maggie Dorsey, a minister and a classical pianist. He entered Eternal Life on March 3, 2009 at the age of 96. His uncle was the gospel songwriter Thomas A. Dorsey. Claude was one of seven children. He had three brothers, William, Floyd & Benjamin and three sisters, Darlene, Mary & Lula Belle. He is survived by his loving wife Mary, his sister Mary, as well as nieces, nephews, fellow musicians, other relatives and friends.
Claude’s musical training started in church. He began playing the piano at the age of three. By the age of 12, Claude was playing professionally. Claude graduated from Lincoln High School. He studied for the ministry but his love for music won out. Claude’s father told him that he could use his musical talents to reach people.
Claude met his wife Mary, while performing at the Clock. She enjoyed going to the Clock and watching Claude perform. They were married on April 24, 1983.
While performing, Claude met or performed with such notables as Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Nat King Cole, Bob Hope, Louie Armstrong, Cab Calloway, Liberace and Tony Bennett.
At the age of 89, Claude recorded his first CD, “Claude Dorsey: What a Wonderful World” featuring Gary Christensen & Scott Van Domelen. Two of his original compositions, “Summer is Over” & “I Live” are on the CD. Claude was inducted in the Wisconsin Area Musician’s Industry (WAMI) Hall of Fame in 2001. He received a Life Time Achievement Award from the Musician’s Union and received proclamations from Milwaukee County, the City of Milwaukee and the State of Wisconsin.
