Newspaper Notice Harper, Louis Edward
Louis Edward Harper born in New Britain, Connecticut January 8, 1925 and died
at his home in Bayside, Wisconsin April 29, 2010.
Lou Harper was born to Louis and Mary Harper, and was raised with his older
sister, Marie Gleason, and his aunt Annie Gordon. He attended New Britain High School, Connecticut State Teachers College and the University of Chicago graduate school becoming a psychologist. He entered the US Navy in 1942 and served in WWII in the Pacific fleet on an electronics repair ship ranging from Alaska to Hawaii to China.
After the war he completed college, entered graduate school and married Joan
Susan Brown from New Britain in 1950. They raised five children, Jennifer
Boettcher (the late William), Joe (Robin), Daniel (Alison), Michael (Fredrika) and
Margie (Michael) Clark. His family grew to include 15 grandchildren and 7 greatgrandchildren, the latest born less than two weeks ago. Each child was an
enormous source of pride and delight for him.
Children were his life's work as well. He worked as a counselor, teacher and
principal at the University of Chicago Orthogenic School for twenty years. He
moved his family to Milwaukee in 1970, working at Lakeside Children's Center
and then as a school psychologist with the Milwaukee Public Schools.
Besides unwavering devotion to his family, friends and work, he loved reading,
music, and languages; never without words, a song and something new to learn or discover in the world.
He mastered life and left a legacy, only surpassed by the wisdom, love and
warmth of his heart.
