Newspaper Notice Meissner, Harriet F.
Harriet Fellman Meissner, of Mequon, died July 25 at the age of 102. She passed away peacefully after a long bout with progressive geriatric dementia.
Harriet was the daughter of Edward and Sarah Fellman and grew up in Milwaukee and Whitefish Bay. Her father founded Phenix Manufacturing Co., of Milwaukee and later of Shawano, WI, a maker of overhead garage doors. She was a graduate of Riverside High School and went on to the Denison University in Ohio where she received her bachelor’s degree in 1931. A year later she married Charles D. Meissner and lived the bulk of her married life in Whitefish Bay.
Harriet was a product of her times. Her life was devoted to raising her family of two boys, David G. and Charles F. Meissner, and supporting her husband and his business, Charles Meissner & Associates, Advertising. She had a great love for art and was an accomplished amateur watercolorist. She probably would have made a professional career of it but her father would not let her follow her interest because at the time it was not a “proper” career for a woman. However, her passion for art led her to be one of the founding members of the art program at the Whitefish Bay Women’s Club. She was also active in her church circles at Roundy Memorial Baptist Church in Whitefish Bay.
She and her husband were great hikers and particularly loved walking the many trails of Door County where they spent their honeymoon and subsequent summer vacations for many years. It was a love that rubbed off on their sons.
After her husband died in 1973, her interests turned to her grandchildren for whom she was always “on call”.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Charles. She is survived by her son David, Charles’ widow Doris, four grandchildren, Linda, Donald, Christine and Andrew, and one great grandchild, Matthew.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Michael Fetherston, Colleen and Barbara and the other nurses and staff of Newcastle Place, for their great care and attention to Harriet’s welfare.
